Gold Jewellery

The Price of Gold

Gold is a very precious metal (AU) and has a much greater density compared to other metals which are used as alloys. It is in this way that gold jewellery of a higher purity shall weigh more. A secondary property of high purity in pieces of jewellery, is that they shall be softer and more malleable. Consequently, designers are more capable of forming the precious metal into beautiful and intricate designs. However, do not be dismayed, although soft compared to other metals, gold jewellery is not easily damaged and maintains its luster and beauty for many years.

Naturally, a third property is that price increases with the purity of the gold piece. Other influences on the cost are if it is designer jewellery and if it has a special finish, such as matte or sandblasted. Regarding these issues, Yellobox is proud of its range of high quality gold jewellery at highly competitive prices.

The Measure of Gold

On receiving your gold jewellery item from Yellobox, you may notice a number adjacent to the letter ‘K’ imprinted on it. In this context, ‘K’ stands for Karat and represents the scale in measuring the purity of gold.

The purest form of gold is considered as 24 Karats and denotes a purity of roughly 99.9%. In relative terms, 22K Gold can be understood as consisting of 22 parts gold and the remaining two constitutes a metal alloy. It could be roughly stated that each Karat is equal to 4.1625% gold purity. Therefore 10K gold would be 41.6% pure and would consist of other metals which are harder than gold. It is the colour from these other metal alloys that enhances the colour of the gold (i.e. white gold, yellow gold, red gold etc.).

Caring for Gold

Although relatively soft compared to other metals, gold jewellery is not easily damaged and can be worn for many years without affecting its worth. It is clearly factual that most gold jewellery is damaged or broken through storing it improperly. This can be easily avoided by storing it in its original box and ensuring it cannot rub off any other gold pieces.

To maintain the shine, luster and beauty of your gold piece, it should remain out of contact with soap, perfume, bleach, hairsprays and similar cosmetics. Additionally, gold jewellery can be conveniently cleaned, effectively and safely by following these guidelines:

1. Fill a bowl of warm water and add a little amount of any mild liquid detergent
2. Using a soft brush, gently rub the jewellery piece until you have created a lather around it
3. Rinse off with warm water and pat dry with a soft, lint-free cloth/towel.
